Take one look at Boylan's embossed glass bottles and you'll know that something special lies within. Boylan Bottling Company began in 1891 when William Boylan, a pharmacist in Paterson, New Jersey, created a tasty soda made from birch tree extract. It was the birth of birch beer. His marketing and distribution plan was simple - drive around town and sell the drinks from a barrel in the back of his horse-drawn wagon. Boylan partnered with a local politician in the early 1900s to start bottling his birch beer. The relationship tanked, but the beverage took off and the business continued through Prohibition. In 1933, William Boylan sold the business to his lead truck driver who began selling both birch beer and root beer. Today Boylan carries an amazing variety of sodas all made with cane sugar and all still in their emblematic glass bottles. From classics like creme soda, their creamy red birch and root beer, to new hits like shirley temples and sparkling lemonade, they carry on the proud legacy of William Boylan and New England soda making.
