The formula for Ale-8-One remains a closely guarded family secret that dates back to the 1920s in Winchester, KY. G.L. Wainscott was no stranger to the soda business - he had spun up a successful flavor and bottling business in 1902. So successful, in fact, that it got the attention of Coca-Cola who unsuccessfully sued him for the name similarity of his cola - Roxa-Kola, named after his wife Roxanne. Even though the suit was unsuccessful, Wainscott wanted to develop a more unique flavor so he went in search of his next big thing in post-war Europe. He was intrigued by the popularity of ginger beer, but wanted to create something a little less spicy and more citrusy. He launched his new flavor back home at the Clark County Fair where he also held a naming contest. One young girl submitted the name "A late one" which was slang for "the latest thing" Wainscott loved it. The secret formula is still mixed by hand by fourth-generation owner and great-great nephew of Wainscott, Fielding Rogers.
